We are seeking an accomplished Software Development Manager to lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, architects, and platform specialists, blending technical mastery with people-centric leadership. This strategic role will shape software development and platform evolution by driving innovative, scalable digital solutions across cloud, mobile, web, and API channels, and by closely collaborating with enterprise and solution architects to ensure alignment with business priorities and industry best practices. The manager will champion modern engineering and delivery methods, cultivate a high-performance, inclusive culture while support career growth, setting goals, and coaching teams operating within agile environments. Acting as a trusted expert for software engineering concepts, this individual will ensure that all solutions adhere to technical standards and foster continuous improvement through effective leadership, technical guidance, and hands-on support.
Job description

o   Guides, reviews and approves technical solution designs, striving towards a reusable API environment where appropriate.

o   Provides technical leadership across agile teams ensuring they are aligned and deliver to the development strategy, patterns and standards that respect compliance, security, operational best practice and best possible user experience.

o   Provides agile bespoke development capability in response to business requirements and technology exploitation.

o   Drives developer training plans and on-boarding to ensure relevant and up to date digital development skills are available.

o   Drives bespoke development architecture and coding standards in line with Woolworth’s digital transformation strategy.

o   Measures developer quality and efficiency.

o   Assists the leadership team in building a digitally capable, business relevant API developer pipeline within the team.

o   Collaborates with the leadership team to set development technologies, architectures, coding standards and processes that enable a speed with quality agile delivery culture.

o   Staying current with emerging new technology.

o   Leads by example and is able to get into the technical details of the development landscape when needed.

Minimum requirements

  • Qualifications – NQF8 level in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent with experience in software development.
  • 5 -10 years software development experience (C#, Python, .NET, Java)
  • 2 years as a Solution Architect.
  • Cloud Computing - SaaS (AWS and Azure)
  • 3 to 5 years working in a lead or management role.
  • Platform creation through APIs.
